Irezumi and Neo-Japanese: what’s the difference?
Irezumi is the traditional Japanese tattoo: dragons, koi, tigers, foo dogs, hannya masks, chrysanthemums and peonies, set against wind bars, waves and clouds that tie the whole piece to the body. Neo-Japanese keeps that composition and symbolism but renders it with today’s tools — richer color, smoother shading and more freedom in the drawing. Planning a Japanese piece at Serjo Tattoo
Japanese work is designed for the body part, not for a flat sheet: the main subject sits where the muscle moves it, and the background fills the shape so the piece reads from across the room. That is why sleeves, back pieces and chest panels are planned as a whole from the first consultation, even when they are tattooed over several sessions. Serjo Bronfman draws every Japanese design himself, in color or in black and grey, and smaller single motifs — a mask, a koi, a flower — are welcome too.
