Black and grey or full color?
Realism is about light: smooth gradients, correct anatomy and the texture of skin, fur or metal. Black and grey realism relies on soft shading and contrast and tends to age the most gracefully. Color realism adds depth with layered tones — our octopus and galaxy pieces are examples of each approach. Portraits, animals and nature are the most common requests; see the family of leopards and the Beethoven portrait.

How a realism tattoo is made at Serjo Tattoo
Every realism piece starts from good reference photos and a consultation about size and placement. Detail needs space: a realistic tattoo that is too small loses its clarity as it heals, so we design to the size your idea deserves. The design is drawn for you, and larger pieces are tattooed over more than one session. Both of our resident artists, Serjo Bronfman and Mai Zait, work in realism in black and grey and in color.
